Hudson is home to Stair Auctioneers and Appraisers, a full-service auction house equipped to handle the sale of a single item or an entire estate.
Colin Stair started the business in 2001, and focused on items valued at $100 to $20,000. “We’ve sold everything from a mummy’s hand to a Bugatti chair,” Stair told Architectural Digest in 2002. The business took off and in 18 months Stair and his staff sold more than 3,000 lots of estate antiques, fine art and decorations, for more than $3 million.
Stair Galleries moved into its current home, a renovated and restored former department store located at 549 Warren Street, in 2005. Catalogued auctions, offering higher-end goods, are held approximately five to seven times per year. Monthly exposition auctions offer a wide variety of items, including furniture, pottery, porcelain, textiles, tribal art and fine art and prints. Usually held on Friday evenings, the event is fast-paced and fun, and buyers always come away with a bargain.
